The Firm was founded by David Dunlop who was admitted as a solicitor in Scotland on 3rd March 1854. The premises
at 2 Barns Street, Ayr, have been the place of business since shortly after 3rd December 1869. Soon after 20th April
1889, David Dunlop assumed his cousin, James Dunlop, as a partner in the firm - hence the Firm name “D & J
Dunlop”.
By 1891 John Hay, the grandfather of two of the present partners, George A. Hay and John A. Hay, had joined the firm
and by 1939, John Hay’s son, John Crawford Hay, the father of George A. Hay and uncle of John A. Hay had become
a partner in the Firm.
After the war, the partners of the Firm comprised John Crawford Hay, James B. Clark and William Johnstone. George
A. Hay joined the Firm in 1977 and his cousin John A. Hay in 1983. Quinton Muir joined the Firm in 1995 and was
assumed a partner in 1998.
